What is RSS?

RSS is short for Rich Site Syndication or also known as Really Simple Syndication.
It is a format to collect informations easily. RSS aggregators will show if there is any updates for the ones you bookmarked ( ex. blogs, news, and forecasts) as a RSS.

In the dictionary "Aggregator" is defined as "a website or program that collects related items of content and displays them or links to them".

RSS aggregators could be divided in several different types,

Web browser type: You can add RSS from your browser
(Internet Explorer7, Firefox etc)

Hosting type: You can add from your websites
(Google Reader, My Yahoo! etc)

Mailer type: You can add from your mail app
(Thunderbird, Headline-Reader etc)

Ticker type: You install it and you will be able to check (pop-up) on your desktop computer
(MQRssReader, Rabbit Ticker etc)

When it comes to picking one of these, it depends on what you feel is more convenient.  Whether you are mostly using desktop computers or like to use both cell phone and desktop and be able to access on the same things or like to be able to track back old articles and to be able to have more functions and stuff.

RSS is being less popular since some of the big companies stopped using them such as Twitter, Firefox, Apple from OS X, and Google Reader. Since you can get all the informations without viewing the adds, the companies will get bankrupt easily, so that is one of the reasons RSS is not used from the business standpoint these days.

With Facebook and Twitter, you can learn new things from different field and find out what is popular among your friends right now. On the other hand, RSS aggregator will only show what you are interested in. This is one of the resource I used. I found it interesting that there are people who thinks the opposite way.

Through this exploring, I thought RSS is useful if you have something you like to know more in depth or always want to be updated with, because it will save a lot of time rather than going to their page all the time.
